Thank you, thank you to Master Bakers Esme and Ruah for the apple cake (moist, correct amount of cinnamon, no dried fruit to annoy Dominic…) and the wonderfully iced sponge cake (not a Victoria sponge, as I was sternly corrected…)

So we’re back out and battling the elements in Ireland South Westish…and like a big warm hug, Mrs Phil Soundman made us a teacake for halftime refreshments

Now, I wouldn’t normally be a fan of the brack, or similar Christmas cake and the like, and Dominic has very strong feelings about the use of raisins or sultanas or any dried fruit in a confection…but this was very lovely and most welcome. Thank you thank you.

In Clonakilty Ray burst into the dressing room at half time, having just been made aware of the high stakes involved, swept aside the commendable selection of biscuits and offered a homemade Pumpkin Pie I think it was. It was a strange beast…bang of the korma offa it. Savoury. Weird.

The night spun out in a whirl of pints and that most traditional of Clonakilty offerings – the Sambasco (Sambuca & Tabasco…). Thanks for looking after us so well. Yissir a gem

Here at the Set Theatre in kilkenny they baked biscuits special for us…this thing has taken on a life of it’s own

a delicate chocolate chip…much appreciated. Though at the risk of sounding ungrateful, and in the name of constructive criticism (there is an American in the touring party, so no more Irish reluctance to say something…), maybe a little overdone…ouch!!

Always 3 different biscuits:

1 – a sturdy, trustworthy number like a HobNob or in last night’s case, the chocolate digestive.

2 – a flashy “treat” , possibly individually wrapped like a chocolate kimberly. Last night – some ponsey Fox’s cream with “real strawberries”…me hoop

3 – the dirty, don’t look at me, I disgust myself, pot-noodle of a biscuit – maybe a jammie dodger or a toffeepop. Last night – Jaffa Cakes. Let the battles begin…bring the pain

Mediocre chocolate chip yokes, and that tarty blow in – the fun size flake/snickers/etc. Now, they do have their place, but the flashy, finicky individually wrapped factor would make a good old trusty HobNob turn in it’s grave. Notable exception – the Tunnocks Tea Cake
